Centre of Modernism in Gdynia

The Centre of Modernism in Gdynia is located in a historical building from 1935-1936, one of the most characteristic modernist objects in Poland. It is also one of the most important buildings of the modernist city centre of Gdynia, created – which nowadays is hard to believe – in a very short time of just several years during the interwar period.

"Ships made of brick and cement are being built in Gdynia on the land!" – this is what the notary Henryk Chudziński wrote in 1937 about the ZUS (Social Insurance Institution) building, at no. 24 10 Lutego Street, where the Centre of Modernism in Gdynia is currently located. These words aptly reflect the idea of the Warsaw architect Roman Piotrowski, who, in accordance with the spirit of modernism prevailing at that time, designed a building that, like a transatlantic ship, is sailing on the streets of Gdynia to meet the Baltic Sea.

It is a place where one can not only be inspired by modernism, but also receive comprehensive information and meet with experts and enthusiasts of this style. The Centre presents modernist details and thematic curiosities.

It is worth taking a look here in order to get acquainted with the resources of the modernist library or join a film adventure presenting the extraordinary values of Gdynia's architecture.

The centre also invites for joining meetings and educational activities on modernism, or for buying original and stylish souvenirs. Informational materials, including offers of popular walks along Gdynia Modernism Trail can be collected here, or downloaded to the mobile phone.
