Soon, residents and enthusiasts of Gdynia's architecture will have the opportunity to learn more about the city. Articles on modernist architecture will be published in the magazine “Modernism in Europe – Modernism in Gdynia.” The online editions will be released twice a year.
Gdynia’s architecture has long attracted the attention of residents and modernism enthusiasts. Unique buildings create a unique atmosphere of the city. On Wednesday, April 30th, Gdynia’s Mayor Aleksandra Kosiorek and Professor Dr. Hab. Eng. Architect Jakub Szczepański, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at Gdańsk University of Technology, signed an agreement that will enable the publication of the scientific journal “Modernism in Europe – Modernism in Gdynia.”
“The materials published in the magazine will focus on modernism,” says Oktawia Gorzeńska, Vice Mayor of Gdynia. “We have agreed that each issue will open with materials about Gdynia’s architecture. Importantly, the magazine will be freely accessible to all residents. I am very pleased that today we have also initiated broader cooperation. We are starting with the publication of this magazine, but future activities will also include educational initiatives. We have many exciting projects ahead for the benefit of Gdynia’s residents.”
“Modernism in Europe – Modernism in Gdynia” will be a collection of scholarly articles. The magazine will be published twice a year in Polish and English. Readers will have free access to the articles via the Gdańsk University of Technology’s website and the city’s online portal.
“The online format will allow us to reach a wider audience,” admits Professor Dr. Hab. Eng. Architect Jakub Szczepański, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at Gdańsk University of Technology. “The university will be responsible for the scientific content of ‘Modernism in Europe – Modernism in Gdynia.’ The articles will not only have an academic character but also aim to present Gdynia’s modernism in a way that reaches all readers.”
Long-term cooperation with Gdańsk University of Technology
The signed agreement on publishing the scientific journal “Modernism in Europe – Modernism in Gdynia” is another step in the ongoing collaboration between Gdynia and Gdańsk University of Technology. For years, the city and the Faculty of Architecture at Gdańsk Tech have been working together on various initiatives, including organizing conferences in the series “Modernism in Europe – Modernism in Gdynia,” which have been held in Gdynia since 2007. The city has become a symbol of modernism and is now the most important center for research and exchange of ideas on architecture from that period.
Joint initiatives between Gdynia and Gdańsk Tech include, among others:
Collaboration on studies related to Gdynia’s cultural heritage,
Support for architecture students’ design projects at the Faculty of Architecture at Gdańsk Tech, including recognition of the best thesis works about Gdynia.
The cooperation between Gdynia and the Faculty of Architecture at Gdańsk University of Technology will continue to develop, with plans to undertake activities related to joint educational and training projects.
