On 18-20 September 2025, the 10th international scientific conference "Modernism in Europe – Modernism in Gdynia" will be held, the theme of the anniversary event being "Protection and Conservation of Historical Modernist Complexes".
As in previous years, the organiser of the conference is the City of Gdynia, in association with the Faculty of Architecture at the Gdańsk University of Technology.
ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
International scientific conferences "Modernism in Europe – Modernism in Gdynia" have been held in Gdynia since 2007. They are the most popular cyclical events on this topic in Poland. Over the past dozen or so years, Gdynia has also become recognisable abroad as a symbol of modernism, and is currently the most important centre for research and exchange of ideas on modernist architecture.
The theme of the next conference will focus on issues related to the protection, conservation and management of historical modernist complexes, and one of the main objectives of the event is to promote knowledge on the urban complex of Gdynia. Gdynia Early Modernist City Centre, after being entered in the register of monuments in 2007, was established a Historical Monument by the President of the Republic of Poland in 2015, and so it was included in the group of the most important monuments of the country. Moreover, in 2023, Gdynia Early Modernist City Centre was selected and submitted as the only Polish candidate for inscription on the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List. It should be mentioned that there are only 17 entries from Poland on this elite list.
The conference programme is prepared not only for experts and scientists from Poland and abroad, but also for the city's residents and visitors. The meetings are open and will be held in Polish and English, with simultaneous interpreting. The conference is supervised by the Scientific Committee which consists of outstanding experts from Poland and abroad.
The conference is held under the honorary auspices of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. In addition, the event is held under the scientific auspices of the National Heritage Institute, the Polish National Committee ICOMOS, DOCOMOMO International, and Europa Nostra.
