Modernist city centre is a historical space of particular importance for Gdynia.
Preparations for entering the city centre into the register of monuments began in 2005 with analyses and expert opinions. In 2006, the Mayor of Gdynia applied to the Pomeranian Voivode to list the city centre on the voivodeship register of monuments. The boundaries of the entry covered a significant part of the city centre area with buildings created in the interwar period. The decision to list the city centre layout on the register of monuments was issued on 21 September 2007.
In the following years, the area of the modernist city centre was almost entirely covered by the local spatial development plans. In 2012, the documentation of the submission of the site for recognition as Historical Monument was developed. In May 2014, the National Council for Heritage Monuments' Protection to the Minister gave a positive opinion on Gdynia's candidacy. The last stage was the inclusion of the city centre of Gdynia among the most important monuments in Poland, under the regulation issued by the President of the Republic of Poland. In mid-2024, this elite list included already 129 sites in Poland. It is worth noting that the city centre of Gdynia was recognised as the sixtieth Historical Monument.
