Archi-Walk: "The Essence of Modernism of the Orłowo District, Part 2"
Conducted by: Robert Chrzanowski
23 November 2024, 11 AM (approx. 2h)
Introduction:
Orłowo, one of the youngest districts of the prewar Gdynia, which for several years developed rapidly as an independent seaside resort (Orłowo Morskie), is associated primarily with summer villas and guesthouses hidden among lush greenery located between the sea shore and the busy Zwycięstwa Avenue. In truth, Orłowo is much larger.
This time we would like to invite you to an Archi-Walk to a section of Orłowo located between the two main communication routes of Gdynia – the main road and the railway, the section being an interesting example of urban planning. This is the place where old routes that date back to the Middle Ages (such as Miodowa Street), were harmoniously incorporated into the grid of streets of the new summer resort delineated in the interwar period. Soon, the first buildings were erected on the plots – villas and guesthouses, at first architecturally referring to historical forms, which, however, quickly began to be replaced by designs in the modernist spirit. Among the creators of the development of this part of Orłowo, there were the leading architects in Gdynia, such as Maksymilian Zuske, Feliks Godlewski or Stanisław Żwirski, as well as more loosely associated with Gdynia Władysław Derdacki and Andrzej Frydecki.
One could also say that this part of Orłowo was favourite among local government dignitaries, since there are villas that used to be owned by the mayor of Gdynia and of Grudziądz, and some were designed by the deputy mayor of Gniezno.
