Essence of Modernism

The "must see", jewels of Gdynia's modernism, the most famous monuments and icons of the city's architecture.

The walk starts in Konstytucji Square. Beginning in front of the railway station, we pass the building of the District Court and go on along Wójta Radtkego Street, to the Market Hall Complex. Walking along Starowiejska Street, in the direction of Jana Pawła II Avenue – our attention should be drawn to Abraham's House and to the Hundsdorff Family Apartment House.

Following the route, it is worth paying a visit to Gdynia Modernism InfoBox (at 30 Świętojańska Street) and see the exhibition devoted to the icons of Gdynia's modernism, as well as a large-format model of Gdynia with the illuminated area of the Modernist City Centre.

In 10 Lutego Street, several excellent modernist buildings simply cannot be missed: the Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego ('National Development Bank', currently PKO Bank) building, the magnificent building of the Polish Post Office, one of the most modern apartment buildings in the prewar Poland – the Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego Residential Building, called the "Bankowiec", and the impressive former ZUS (Social Insurance Institution) Building. The latter one currently houses the Centre of Modernism in Gdynia (at no. 24 10 Lutego Street).
