Year of built

1935-1936

The BERGENSKE Office Building, currently the municipal police station

The building was raised in 1935-1936, according to the design of the duo of architects: Wacław Tomaszewski and Zygmunt Wóycicki (from PRACOWNIA ARCHITEKTONICZNA WSPÓLNA 40) for the BERGENSKE freight and stockbroking company.

The body of the building has a modern frame structure of reinforced concrete, and the façades are covered with yellowish sandstone slabs. Before the war, there were office and service areas on the ground floor and first floor, and apartments on higher floors. The headquarters of the BERGENSKE company belonged to the most representative office buildings in Gdynia, and the location in Portowa Street was not a coincidence – the main artery connecting the City Centre (Kaszubski Square) with a modern seaport.

After the last renovation of the façade, the building was restored to a condition similar to that of the late 1930s. Undoubtedly, the shape of the object is one of the most successful marriages of functionalism with elements of the so-called new monumentalism.

It is worth remembering: in the vicinity of the building there is one of the most popular music clubs in Gdynia - "Blues Club", organising regular concerts of Polish and foreign performers.
