House of Swedish Sailor

House of Swedish Sailor is an interesting example of late functionalism (expressive functionalism).

This building, designed by Stanisław Płoski, was commissioned in mid-1936. Inside the building there was a hotel, and the Swedish consulate with a meeting room where a chapel was arranged. The hotel wing was lower and without any ornaments, while the higher wing of the consulate had interesting decorations. The corner entrance arcades and the ground floor strip were lined with gray stone slabs. The first floor level is faced with brick, and a clearly outlined cornice runs just above the ground floor windows. Lesenes on the first floor, referring to the texture of the ground floor lane, create an interesting frame of windows lightening up the chapel.
