Polish Sailor’s House (currently: Gdynia Maritime University)

One of Gdynia's most characteristic and representative buildings, and part of the maritime panorama of the city.

Designed by Bohdan Damięcki and Tadeusz Sieczkowski. It was their bold project that won the urban and architectural competition for the development of South Pier. The building consisted of three parts. The highest of them – the middle part – referred to the ship's style: rounded, with a superstructure and a canopy, stylised as a captain's bridge. Inside, it housed a hall, a meeting room, and club rooms. In the northern part, an indoor swimming pool was built. The Sailor's House was to serve as the centre of Polish sailing, but the outbreak of World War II only a year after its construction thwarted these plans. Today, it houses the Navigational Faculty of the Maritime University. A planetarium was added in the 1970s, from the side of the marina.
